My client is one of the largest independent builder’s merchants in South Wales and has been established since 1956 providing a continual service to the fencing and timber industry for over sixty years.


They supply businesses and private clients throughout South Wales from a branch network in Risca; Pontypool and Newport. The business is run by the family who as Directors oversee the running of the various branches.


All of their timber comes from fully sustainable and renewable resources and our sawmills are exceptionally environmentally friendly and produce no waste at all as every part of the log is used for something in the timber industry, right down to the sawdust which is stockpiled and sold.


As a result of continued growth and success, they are now looking to appoint their first Financial Controller to the management team.


Job specification

  • Full responsibility for the efficient operation of the Finance Department and the development of the team
  • Provide sound financial advice to the Directors and other senior management colleagues
  • Advise, select and implement a fit for purpose IT system to support the business needs
  • Ensure that financial and other controls are established, maintained and monitored to ensure compliance with relevant policies, procedures and accounting standards
  • Produce accurate, reliable and timely financial reports for Board of Directors
  • Ensure all aspects of cash management are targeted and measured driving continuous improvement
  • Timely and accurate production of budgets and forecasts
  • Actively contribute to business and financial strategy
  • Provide commercial support to the Directors in order to strengthen overall financial growth
  • Support operational aspects of the business, identify and encourage cost saving initiatives/opportunities
  • Ensure that the company is comprehensively covered for business liabilities and other insurance



Candidate profile

  • Qualified ACA/ACCA/CIMA.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience operating at a senior level
  • Demonstrable proven track record of achieving objectives and delivering tangible business benefits.
  • Must have an excellent level of business acumen, with the ability to think strategically.
  • Experience in the management of cash flow, financial control and financial analysis.
  • Experience in management reporting, financial and management accounting.
  • Experience in system development and control.
  • Excellent people management skills.

A fully qualified accountant is required, with experience in a manufacturing or FMCG related environment.


The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills and be able to present information in a concise and articulate manner


The ability to interpret and communicate financial results for budget holders will be essential as well as possessing the ability to work on your own initiative and within a team environment
